Ok, another exciting week gone by and we get a little bit closer to those dog days of summer.  Ok so maybe I am getting a little ahead of the current weather here in Michigan.  The truth is that we are not that far away from seeing warmer temperatures, and as I wrote about last week this can have an effect on the animals that share our lives as well.  Last week I covered some things to help keep your aquarium cool.  This week I want to talk about our four-footed furry friends, just like my little girl up above.

My little girl is an Alaskan Malamute named Isis; you may have met her if you've ever been to the store.  Now different animals react differently to warmer weather, just like people, hhhmmmmmm some food for thought.  Anyway, being a snow dog owner I often get asked the question if I will shave her for the summer.  Since these types of dogs are built for arctic conditions most people believe that they're insulating under coat will cause them to overheat.  While this is partially true the fact is that the undercoat protects the dog in all kinds of weather hot or cold, just like it keeps warm air in in the winter it also keeps it out in the summer.  So the first tip, before shaving that long coat off your dog or cat, check with your veterinarian to see what they suggest for your animal.

Ok the next one should be a no brainer, but you wouldn't believe the people that don't think of it.  LEAVE PLENTY OF WATER OUT FOR YOUR ANIMALS DURING THE SUMMER.  Just like humans a petz water consumption goes up during the summer, so the best thing you can do to fight heat stroke is to make sure they have lots of water.  If you like to take your pet with you when you leave make sure to invest in a travel bowl or water bottle.  There are all kinds of products on the market for petz during the summer months.  Some things to look for coming soon to Extreme Petz are:

Cool Pet fortified liquid treats (Gator Aid for animals) www.yourcoolpet.com

Chillybuddy dog cooling solution (Heat shield for animals) www.chillybuddy.com

Check these cool  items out online and head into the store to try them yourself.

Remember our petz depend on us for everything and in return they give us unconditional love,

Todd
